How do you take a good studio photo? Top 8 tips for success

This all starts with finding the right location, the right people and the right equipment. Let Silo Studios guide you with our top 8 tips for photography success. Although important, it's not all about the photographers camera or lens.

The lens

Choose the right lens for your project, or subject. You want to avoid distortion, or that stretching-effect often from wide-angle lenses, a softer focus, and ensure the focus is on the main subject (object, or person) and not studio backdrop noise or props.

Zoom

Not video calls. We recommend shooting with a prime lens. These typically produce a higher quality shot compared to a standard zoom lens, and will force the photographer to move around to obtain the best shots - often know as 'zoom with your feet'.

Let there be light

This is fundamental to the success of a photography or video shoot in a studio. Be in control of the lighting. Take your time to get this right - experiment with producing the right effect for your photo shoot. Lighting can transform your image from good, to great!

A remote trigger

Combining your setup with a tripod potentially gives the best result - this gives the photographer a little more time to get the right light, zoom and engage with the subject. A slow shutter speed may allow you to experiment with more ISO and aperture freedom.

A trigger means you can step away from the camera and focus on your subject and other influences.

The subject

If this is a person, it's key to connect with the person. Ensuring the subject is comfortable in front of the camera is key to success in portrait photography. Find a connection, some common ground, and build on this. A few compliments along the way may help your subject feel more relaxed and produce more natural shots.

Single focus

A single focus point is vital for creating impact. Poor focus is something you cannot fix in post-production editing! Make sure you are in control and focus on what matters.

Focus on the eyes

One of the easiest ways to create compelling portrait photography is to focus on the subjects eyes.

Movement

The two most critical elements to creating stunning photography - exposure and composition. You should not be afraid to mix things up - move in, move out, move up, move down. Try different angles, then review the results.

The stage is set. These tips should get you thinking. Contact Silo Studios for more advice.
