What is a photography studio?

A commercial photographic studio is often a private business owned and represented by one or more photographers, possibly accompanied by assistants and staff, who create and sell their own and/or clients photographs.

 

Traditionally, studio photography is created indoors within a blank space (or empty room), in a managed setting where the professional photographer has control over all the elements that influence and create a photograph; including the space, lighting, backdrop, models and props.

In general, a photography studio requires a camera, a tripod, lights, light stands, light modifiers and reflectors. A backdrop is required, a computer to run software, software for editing photos, storage for saving photos and cleaning supplies for equipment.

A photo shoot is a session where a model - typically the client who pays for the services of a photographer - poses for a photograph inside a studio or other outdoor locations in order to take multiple photos.

 

Commonly, clients will commission for a photo shoot before, during, or after major life events such as graduations, newborns, weddings and holidays. Some photographers also produce photo shoots for pets, families, and product ads - such as fashion, food, technology and automotive for commercial use.

 

Photo shoots are often used in print (such as newspapers and magazines) and also online (particularly within ecommerce retail) to help sell a product or service.

Commercial photography is professional photography used to help sell or promote a product or service to support a businesses growth, and ultimately increase sales. This could commonly be product photography, fashion photography or lifestyle photography depending on the client or business requirements - this typically is photography that appears on a business or ecommerce website, within magazines, catalogs and literature or featuring on an advert.

What is industrial photography?

 

Industrial photography is a professional photography niche that specialises within the industrial business sector - this may include photography for engineering companies, manufacturers, factories, technology-based businesses etc, these may typically require photography for large scale products, equipment, machinery or facilities.  Similar to commercial photography these types of photos may commonly be used for marketing collateral, corporate literature, magazines, brochures and online websites capturing technology, innovation and industrial work.

What is model photography?

Model photography, also commonly referred to as fashion photography, are models or individuals who are photographed professionally for a living. Typically model photography is used for marketing and brand campaigns, advertising, product shots and fashion/clothing. Models are often required to be confident and experienced in modelling, while professional photographers need a good eye for artistic ability, attention to detail and be able to capture certain moods.
